How do I make my computer faster?

Here are 7 things we recommend you try to enhance the speed of your computer.

Restart your computerWhen your computer is left on, background programs and apps can take over memory. Restarting your computer can refresh memory and allow for proper instalments to update. It’s important to shut down or restart your computer at least once a week to keep things running smoothly.

Close unused tabsIf you have been working on lots of different tasks at the same time you may have lots of tabs open, this will slow the computer down. Simply restart your browser and this will clear any unused tabs.

Delete or remove large/ unnecessary filesAny temporary files that were used in an installation process, caches and cookies from the internet can take up a lot of space on your hard drive. PC: Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.

Backup your dataIf you feel like your computer has your whole life memories inside, it is probably a good idea to backup your data. You can backup online using the following; Dropbox, Amazon Drive, One Drive and Google Drive to name a few. (others are available) By backing up your data it will free up space on your computers RAM, allowing your computer to run smoother and faster.

Uninstall unnecessary programsWe are all guilty at times of downloading programs for single use purposes. If we are no longer using the programs, we should regularly delete them. Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs/Uninstall a Program. This will show a master list of all programs installed. For unfamiliar programs, right-click and choose Last Used On to see how frequently you use the program.

Check RAM and add more if needed – Random access memory (RAM) is the storage memory used by any computer. Your computer may be running slower due to larger files processing or performing multiple actions at once. Initialize the Windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del. Select the Performance tab and find the area titled, Physical Memory (MB). If you find that the number next to Available is less than 25% of your total MB you should consider adding RAM.

Delete internet browsing historyAlthough it seems like clearing your internet history wouldn’t make a difference to the speed of your computer, clearing your history will free up data and help increase the speed.
